ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
(from sign an entry to the garden)
We acknowledge this place as Aboriginal Land. We acknowledge the Yuggara Language Nation and the many clans within it – Turbal, Jagera, Yerongpan and Yugarabal. We recognize the Elders of the past and present.
We also acknowlege neighbouring groups who have known this land over many thousands of years. These include: Yugambeh, Gubbi Gubbi, Wakka Wakka, Noonuccal and others.
(from the front cover of the cookbook)
We acknowledge that wherever we live, work or play, we occupy Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander lands. We acknowledge that these lands were taken without permission, payment or treaty.
We pay respect to Elders of the past, the custodians of Country who passed on their knowledge and law so Elders of today can maintain and nurture the longest, continuous living culture on the planet.
We pay respect to the Yuggera and Turbal peoples and recognize their on-going connects and custodian ship of Country
We also acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, who, despite the horrific impacts of colonization, continue to care for Country, people and community.
We are especially grateful to the many First Nations people who offer Ballangala their time, knowledge, experience, patience, support and guidance – without this, Balaangala could not exist.
THE GROUP
Balaangala Community Group is a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people from The Gap and the surrounding areas.
The name Balaangala is made up of two parts: balaang meaning “two coming together” (from the Gamilaraay language of which members and their family are connected) and ala which is a suffix (not of this area) meaning “place of”.
