Balaangala Book Club meets on the first Saturday of alternate months at 12.30 – 1.45pm in the Balaangala Garden at 98 Yoorala st, The Gap. We focus on books authored by First Nations people. We understand that as non-First Nations people, we have a responsibility to listen, read, and learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors about the history of colonisation and the impact it had and continues to have on First Nations people. The books we read add to our knowledge and understanding and prompt further discussions and exploration.
At each meeting the group decides by discussion and consensus on which book to read next time.
Some of the books that we’ve read and discussed so far include:
Stan Grant, Talking to My Country
Claire Coleman, Lies, Damned Lies: A personal exploration of the impact of colonisation
Bruce Pascoe and Bill Gammage, Country
Tara June Winch, The Yield
Tyson Yunkaporta, Sand Talk
If you’d like to come along please email balaangalathegap@gmail.com. It’s an open group so people come when they are able. People on the email list are notified of the next book that we’re going to discuss.
